Please excuse that i write in english, hope I´dont piss anyone off.

 

Just wanted to say thanks for a nice website. It´s great to see that you guys value and appreciate the Y60 as much as i do. It is a fabulous car for offroading.

 

I have also been looking at pictures from your wonderful country and I´ve decided to take a trip in september this year. I am planning to stay for 14 - 16 days. I havent made a route yet, but i guess we will try to drive through the Carpatians. So, if you see a green Norwegian Y60 - honk your horn so we can have a chat and exchange stories. We´d love to get to know you.

 

Any suggestions on tracks would be most appreciated.

To make your trip more enjoyable:

 

First make a plan of action for these 16 days.

 

Our country is quite complex and there are many beautiful things to see.

 

You make a plan to beat the zone, three days in each area of ​​interest and between them a day trip on the asphalt . So in 16 days you can go in 4 places in the country.

 

I would recommend this:

 

1.Maramures area with the support of Max

 

2.Apuseni Mountains area, a very old and beautiful Carpathian - about 200km from point 1

 

3. Gorj-Sibiu-Valcea area , an area where the topography makes the area a little more aggressive offroad . At the same time it can go with the car and the road on the famous Transalpina (spectacular view) - about 200km from point 2

 

4. Drobeta Area - Boilers Danube (Cazanele Dunarii) - a wonderful area with landscape but less spectacular scenery as about 250 km from point 3

 

Your trip has ends Mehedinti somewhere close enough to leave the country home.

 

I stay away from all these areas , I can not help too much but I hope I gave you an idea of ​​how to organize this trip.

My name is Cristian, and I'm happy to hear about your plan to come visit Romania. Trust me, it will worth your effort and you will be amazed!

 

I have to say that I work in Norway for a fjell sikring company, for the last eight years and still going, and since we worked few times in Bergen area, I can say you have there the rain, you have the mountains, you have the forest, but i have to ask:

Were do norwegians go off-roading?! 'Cause I saw here in Norway a lot of 4x4s more or less prepared, but all the time clean and shiny :grin: Really, I always wondered. I even ask some guys around Andalsnes were do they go, and they just replayed: "Around Isfjorden". But all the forest roads are so civilized here in Norway!

So yes, I am interested in your offer of info about off road driving in Norway.

 

On topic: I can help you with info and recomendations especialy about Apuseni Mountains (but also other places), since I was (and still am) a mountain rescuer and mountain guide in the area. And if I am in September back in Romania, maybe I/we will join you for a part of your trip (if you want, of course).

Hello Yonutz, and thanks for your answer.

 

We (me and a friend) will be com in in one car only. We´ll go alone because we war to be free to change plans and to spend some extra time if we meet nice people and find interesting places. A big group cat do that - everything have to be planned in detail, and you have to follow the plan to avoid conflicts etc.

I´m sure you know all about it ;)

 

So what we´re thinking is pretty much the same as what you are suggesting. Do some research on different areas, so that we have several options, then decide as we go.

 

I will take good care of the numbers you provided. As you say, that might come in handy. I also thank you for offering mechanical support and parts. To have someone to call if we have trouble makes a big, big difference.

 

From the pictures I´ve seen you have a wonderful country. There is no way we can see it all in 16 days. But, with tips from guys like you I´m sure we´ll have 16 days worth remembering. Planning has just started, and this is what we´ve got :

 

1) Try to be in Cluj sept 8. or 9. Then spend some days in the Apuseni Mountains.

 

2) Drive to Gorj/Valcea via the Transalpina road. Meet Ursu sept 12-14, and drive with him in the mountains (If he can find the time ).

 

3) Transfagarasan

Then try to find some nice tracks in that area. Then head east and north. No details yet, any suggestions would be most welcome.

 

4) Murumares

Try to meet with Max (If he can find the time). Need to work out any details later.

 

5) Sept 25. or 26. - Start driving back to Norway

Yes, we have the rain.... especially in Bergen. It almost drive me crazy. We also have mountains, fjords and forests. The country is made for offloading, but alas, the restrictions are pretty heavy (as for most things in Norway).

 

Offroading, in general, is forbidden. Any driving in the outback has to happen on closed tracks (yes - this sucks).

 

As in Romania we have a lot of local off road clubs. Sometimes an introduction can be useful. Send me a PM and i will help with what i can.

I'll do my best to have free in that period, but it's not always as I want. I have to wait until August probably to know what projects we have to complete at work.

Anyway, I will make you some suggested routes for Apuseni Mountains, since the other areas seems covered.

But first, some questions:

-You will come from Hungary thru Oradea?

-You really want to start from Cluj Napoca, or are you willing to start somewhere between Oradea and Cluj Napoca?

-Tent or cabin/pension?

-Are you willing to spend 2-3 hours hiking to visit different sightseeing points, caves, gorges? Not something very difficult, just

nature beauties.

-You want a relaxed trip with generous foodbrakes, or push the pedal and see as much as you can?

Hello again Christian. Hope we get to see you, but we know: work comes first.

 

- We´ll probably come via Hungary/Budapest. I met some people there back in 2009 when i did the Budapest - Bamako run.

 

- We have very few "must do´s" on our trip, so starting around Oradea should be no problem.

- We have no specific demands for accomodations. We´ll bring a tent and stay in hotels or pensions when they are available.

- Hiking in between offloading is excellent. None of us are mountain climbers, but we do enjoy hiking. We´d love to see as much as possible of your country, but most important is to meet people and enjoy our stay. No need to rush things, if we miss something vital we´ll have a reason to come back :)

 

Getting to drive and hike with a mountain guide/offroader is a rare treat. We´ll Make sure u plan things so that you have fun, we´ll tag along and enjoy the ride!

 

As i´m sure you know there no such thing as a free ride in Norway, not even offroading. All the regulations in Norway can make things difficult. But, we have a lot of scenic routes - and you can drive there with ordinary cars. I guess you already know this. I´m sure you tried "Trollstigen" when you were in Åndalsnes, its a nice place - they tell me it can be compared to Transfagarasan, although on a smaller scale.

 

 

if you had 10 days with rain and 10 days without you were lucky :) A winter some years ago we had 90 days with rain...... that was really depressing.

 

If you want to bring your car to Norway i´ll try to help with safe parking when you´re in Romania.

So it sounds like you already have a great plan and a few people willing to help, which is normal with people on this forum. ALL the areas indicated by my colleagues are to be visited, no doubt about it.

 

I don't know how much information on Romania you could find written in Norwegian, other than a couple general guide books, and I am sure that -although some of us could write pages about places you should see and things to experience- a picture is worth a thousand words.

Living in the Apuseni range myself, may I suggest a few words/expressions you should ask Google Images about (these are all to be found in the Apuseni area, but they are not all of them):

First of all, appreciate the people, traditions and nature as such in your country and you can find a Romania as you never dared to dream.

 

We go by trucks up the mountain long enough and every time we find something new.

 

If you see Ursu in September in Gorj or Valcea, and I'll do my best to get to the meeting but depend very much my job and now I can not say anything.

 

Everyone wants to see Transfagarasan, especially foreigners who know little about Romania, but it is not so spectacular as speaking. There are more interesting places.

Thank you for the links. I´ve studied all the pictures, and it looks like your country has more to offer than i could have imagined. Norwegians know too little about Romania. When I started looking at pictures i was expecting to see some kind of grey east block country. Man, was i wrong. From what i´ve seen you have a wonderful country, and people seem to be very friendly. I now believe Romania to be a treasure, undiscovered by most ignorant people in Europe. That won´l last long, i´m sure.

Hi guys, and thanks to all of you that have responded to this thread. Thanks to you we´re really looking forward to visiting Romania. We´re leaving next friday and we´ll start with visiting Max in Maramures, then take a trip to the Apuseni where we will try to meet meet with Trenu and Catalinu. Then we will try to drive Transalpina down to Valcea where we meet Big Ursu and Younutz. They have offered us to join them in a weekend trip in Gorj/Valcea. (Big Ursu and Younutz have given us invaluable help, can´t thank them enough).

 

From there we´ll head to Sibiu and Brasov. Then we will probably head back to Murumares to spend the last week there.

 

If any of you guys see an old greenbeat up troll with Norwegian plates , please honk your horn! We´d love to meet you and exchange stories.

I just discovered this discussion! Many coleagues here were giving good informations to you about our country! As somebody said this already, you will discover a very different Romania, not the one presented by media all over Europe! I could see nobody said anything about another gorgeous region in our country: Bucovina! A region were you will discover a beautiful landscape, nice peoples and (like in Maramures) some of the best preserved traditions and a lot of places listed by UNESCO, and I am talking about our fortified monasteries (Voronet, Humor, Sucevita, Moldovita). Also we have there a lot of places were we can go off-road. I live not far away from Bucovina, but unfortunately I don't think I will be in the area at that time. Now I am just 3,5 driving hours away from... Bergen and I'll be here till mid september. Hope you will have an outstanding experience in Romania, enjoy the good food, drinks (you have to try palinca and our good wines), the landscape and our coleagues company.

A region were you will discover a beautiful landscape, nice peoples and (like in Maramures) some of the best preserved traditions and a lot of places listed by UNESCO, and I am talking about our fortified monasteries (Voronet, Humor, Sucevita, Moldovita). Also we have there a lot of places were we can go off-road. I live not far away from Bucovina, but unfortunately I don't think I will be in the area at that time. Now I am just 3,5 driving hours away from... Bergen and I'll be here till mid september. Hope you will have an outstanding experience in Romania, enjoy the good food, drinks (you have to try palinca and our good wines), the landscape and our coleagues company.
