Has anyone any advice or GPS tracks we could use? We will be camping so any advice on this, wether we can wild camp, legalities or recommended sites would be welcome.

Also,we are interested in Romanian folk music.Any small festivals, venues or areas where impromtu, spontaneous performances take place?

Interested in the wild side of your beautiful country!!!

Thanks for any help or advice,Rob. Drum Bun

Re: Romania tour off road July from UK/Deutchland

Hi Rob,

I did notice your post a couple days ago, but since I couldn't provide any real help with maps, I decided to just leave it alone and come back some other time. Turns out this area of the forum doesn't get much attention. I'm not from Maramures, so definitely can't find any more words to describe my inability to help you there. However, I do know a nice pub in Baia Mare, if it's still there, that would be Route 66. But that's not much help either, is it. What I can do about Baia Mare is try to hook you up with a couple girlfriends of mine, they can show you the ropes and whatnot, and man that sounds awkward, but believe me it's alright, no kinky stuff going.

I don't know of any camping sites either, but what I can tell you about camping in the wild is that it's technically illegal. However, the rangers I've had the occasion to meet on my journeys were pretty decent and honest, laid back sort of guys, and if you're polite and greet them, they will most likely happily help you around and never have any problem with you camping in the wild, as long as you hold on to your responsibilities and leave a clean site behind you. No burning plastic stuff also, they hate that. You should be wary of bears, though, the brown bear population is thriving. If camping, first thing you should keep in mind is let the bear know you're there. They don't want to hunt you, they don't want to have any sort of business with you, but they really appreciate you letting them know you're there, so they can go be solitary somewhere else.

At some point you may have heard about Rosia Montana, probably in a gold mining related context (cyanide scandal). Besides that matter, you may have also heard that the place is fantastic and probably even thought visiting. There's a chance I can hook you up over there with this awesome biker girl that usually works and lives there (and by now you might think I must be pimping, but no she's a dear friend). That really depends on her travels, she's the kind that travels a lot, and I guess you can relate to that. I might even consider joining you on a little trip, I've been thinking of visiting Rosia Montana for a while now.

Lots of mountains to climb here and for what I know there's a pretty strong offroading community in the counties of Maramures and Cluj, so technically the thread should be flowing with places to visit, but I guess this is the dark side of the forum. If you do come to Mures county, give me a shout, I have a little more power here and things can be done - I'm an expert drinker, and I'm sure we could find some cultural events, or just make some up with a couple bottles of Jameson. Though I really would recommend getting some Maramures folklore going, I heard it's the real deal. Probably in direct relation to their world renowned Palinka, the awesome magic plum juice.

Soo I really hope this thread gets a little more attention, because I know there are people that know stuff on this forum, and dammit if English language is giving them a hard time, I'll happily translate, but I know that's not the problem.

You let me know if there's anything I can do for you, I will happily help.

Excellent!! Thanks for your eloquent and thorough reply. We have not finalised the trip yet as to when and where,as we are waiting to put a route together that took us off road as long as possible. We have heard about the famous Palinka and look forward to trying a glass or two 😜. I will let you know when we have a plan. Cheers and thanks for your kind help so far. Rob
