f_zoltan
Re: Off-road in Romania Welcome! Many people, including myself, can provide you tracks. Unfortunately, by the time you'll come the Transalpina might become, just like the Transfagarasan is now, a road for any car. It is under transformation since last year and I guess until the fall comes it will become a civilian tarmac road. In that case you won't need tracks, you'll just have to follow the road :) Of course, if you want to add some offroad flavor to the Transalpina (it worths seeing it anyway) there are several sideroads to add to your plans. You'll have to detail your plans and we can certainly help. Samurai incepator
Guest esky_t
Re: Off-road in Romania It is very sad to hear that the Transalpina pass might become a tarmac road until the fall. We have the same problem here in Greece with many spectacular roads transformed from gravel to tarmac. Any way!!! Our plan is to stay in Sibiu from July 5 until July 9 which will be the departure day. We want to make 2-3 off-road trips in this period. So the program will be: July 3. Arrival Day – Bucharest July 4. Bucharest. No Off-road. Tourist activities. July 5. Bucharest – Transfagarasan – Sibiu. July 6. Sibiu – Transalpina pass – Sibiu. July 7. Off – Road. Please advice us. July 8. Off – Road. Please Advice us. July 9. Departure Day – Sibiu – Bucharest – Sofia – Thessaloníki. We are looking for off-road routes that combines nature and driving pleasure, arround 50-80km a day. We have a well prepared vehicles but we are not looking for extreme tracks. Thank you!!! f_zoltan
Re: Off-road in Romania If you settle with gravel roads and don't expect something extreme, you can combine the Transalpina with a route that includes Polovragi-Petrimanu-Ciunget-strategica-Saua Stefanu-Obarsia Lotrului. This allows you to see beautiful places (if the weather is good :) ) visit one or two remarcable caves (Muierii and Polovragi) and includes at least two possible places to sleep if the route prooves to be longer than you expect. Also, the guys from Sibiu can give you alternative routes between Sibiu-Voineasa or Sibiu-Obarsia Lotrului. Samurai incepator

Hi, if you plan to go through Transfagarasan it worth playing a little on the southern part of Fagaras mountain since is in you way. You can climb at 2300m on Fagaras close to highest Romanian pick by following one of the attached tracks. The route is not difficult if it was no rain for few dais. Still if you go there you should take into account two aspects: - don't camp on the forest area because there are a lot of bears and those from Fagaras are quite dangerous compared with other places; - on the top of the edge you should be carefull at the lightnings in case is raining; if you plan to camp there and is raining with lightenings you better stay in the car; If you change the plan and put the transfagarasan route on a weekend day I might come with you. Regards. Va salut !

f_zoltan
Re: Off-road in Romania Look, I'll post some details. First, a Google Earth snapshot. The red path is the Transalpina. Actual track from one of my many passes. The green line is a rout I've actually taken, not a track but it's an accurate sketch of it. The blue line is another route I've been on, it's also a sketch, I'm not exactly certain about a few details but it is close to it. The blue route I've been with Petre Niteanu, he might have an actual track, I don't know. The area is South form DN7A, the part North to it towards Sibiu is better known by the boys from Sibiu, I'm sure they have some proposals for you. The archive contains KML files for all the three variants. The green is called Strategica.kml and contains the actual strategic road Ciunget-Stefanu and the route between Plovragi-Petrimanu-Ciunget. The red track is called Transalpina.kml and includes my route from my hometown, Petrosani, to Obarsia Lotrului, a part you are probably not interested in. The blue track I called Galbena.kml. The snapshot has some of the points of interest you should not miss if you drive by: caves, lakes, sceneries, gorges. I might be able to join you at Obarsia Lotrului if it does not bother you. By the way, my avatar is shot exactly on the Transalpina, in october 2008. Edited April 9, 2010 by f_zoltan Samurai incepator
watcher
Re: Off-road in Romania Transalpina is worth seeing at least once in a lifetime, no matter if it is asphalted or not :-) Besides the colleagues suggestion, here is a track that has the advantage of being quite soft on the 'uphill' side IF you do it from the south to the north and IF it is sunny and dry. It takes you an 3 peaks over 2000 m altitude !
Guest esky_t
Re: Off-road in Romania Guys thank you for your suggested routes. We are counting days for our trip to Romania. 4 Niva and 8 people have set their final travelling plan: :bannana 3/7 Saturday | Athens - Sofija 4/7 Sunday | Sofija - Sibiu 5/7 Monday | Sibiu - Rest 6/7 Tuesday | Sibiu - Transalpina - Sibiu 7/7 Wednesday | Sibiu - Off Road Somewhere or Rest 8/7 Thursday | Sibiu - Draculas castle - maybe Brasov - Sibiu 9/7 Friday | Sibiu - Transfagarasan - Bucharest 10/7 Saturday | Bucharest - Sofija 11/7 Sunday | Sofija - Athens Of course our plan will probably change according to the weather or our body strength ( hard life in a Niva :tr ) on 6,7,8 July. We already have contacted Sibiu Offroad Club. We are looking for a GPS program and maps for laptop with Windows XP. We have already the Igo for PDA with maps of Romania and it seems good, but we want something better for offroad. Thank all of you once more for your help. It will be nice to meet you somehow in Romania.
